Surra qualifies for nationals

West Liberty University wrestler Doug Surra won the 141-pound championship at the NCAA Division II Super Regional tournament held last weekend at Mercyhurst College in Erie.
The former St. Marys Area standout and two-time NCAA All-American is in his senior season wrestling for the Hilltoppers.
This is the third time Surra has qualified for the NCAA national tournament which will be held in Houston, Texas, March 13-14.
Surra went 4-0 in the tournament. He beat Adam Whetstone of University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in the finals 11-5. Whetstone is a former PIAA state champion. Surra now has 104 wins in his collegiate career.
Other former District 9 wrestlers placing at the tournament were UPJ's Kyle Keane (Bradford) second at 165 pounds, West Liberty's Nick Wykoff (DuBois) fourth at 133, Mercyhurst's Lenny Calhoun (Brockway) fifth at 149 and UPJ's Zach Lundgren (DuBois) sixth at 174.
