Brookville junior wrestlers bring home seven state medals

ERIE - A large contingent of Brookville wrestlers at this year's Junior Wrestling State Championships at Tullio Arena combined to bring home seven state medals last weekend. Four medalists - a top-eight finish - came from the 13-14-year-old, or junior high division. In the 102-pound class, Brock Zacherl went 4-1 to claim third place. Zacherl reached the semifinals only to lose to eventual champion Tyson Dippery of Central Dauphin. Dippery went on to beat Area 5 runner-up Seth Spack of Punxsutawney in the finals. Zacherl beat Spack in the Area 5 finals. Zacherl rebounded in the consolation bracket and won two bouts to claim third. He blanked West Chester's Cory McQuiston, 7-0, in the third-place bout. Zacherl's twin brother, Brodie at 117, and 252-pounder Logan Stout, each finished sixth. Brodie finished with a 3-3 record while Stout went 2-3. At 112, Brett Smith finished seventh with a 4-2 record. He lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Austin Matthews of Reynolds, but rebounded in the consolation bracket to earn a top-eight finish. One wrestler earned a medal in the 11-12-year-old division as Jonah Sampson placed eighth in the 135-pound class and going 3-3 for the weekend. He won all three of his bouts in the consolation bracket to get into a medal place. Two wrestlers medaled in the 10-and-under age division. Cabe Park was fourth at 50 pounds, finishing with a 3-2 record. Park lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Matt Parker of Pennridge and battled back to the consolation finals before losing again. Cole Aaron was fifth at 70 pounds with a 4-2 record. He won three of his bouts in the consolation bracket, including a pin of Keith Batkowski of Montoursville in the fifth-place bout. Twelve other wrestlers competed in the three age divisions and did not place.
