Elker wrestlers handle Towanda

by Courier Express

Posted on January 5, 2010

The Ridgway Elkers wrestling team enjoyed a 37-18 thrashing of Towanda Sunday afternoon at Lock Haven University's Thomas Field House.
The special match preceded the Division I college match between Penn State and Lock Haven University. Penn State, ranked 15th in the country, beat the Bald Eagles, 32-6.
The win avenged a narrow, 33-32, loss that the Elkers suffered to Towanda a little more than a year ago at the Towanda Duals.
The Elkers (3-0) won nine of 14 matches, including five by major decision or better.
Two Ridgway grapplers, 285-pounder Joe Chittester and 160-pounder Sam Skraba, each collected pins.
Chittester got his midway through the first period, decking Towanda's Aaron Schutz just 1:02 into the match.
For Skraba, his pin came in the second period at the 3:40 mark over Cody Curry.
103-pounder Corey Bush piled up the points in winning by technical fall, 20-5, over Ben Lamphere.
Garet Pisani also rolled to a big win at 140 pounds. He majored Zachary Ripic, 15-2.
D.J. Skraba collected a major decision, 11-3, over Justin Hunsinger at 152 pounds.
Two other Ridgway wrestlers kept their opponents scoreless in recording decisions.
At 119, Slade Horner blanked Dale Maynard, 5-0, and at 135 pounds, Steve Mitchell shut out Towanda's Jimmy Sheets.
Ridgway's other two winners also performed well defensively, allowing their opponents just three combined points.
At 215, Jesse Sheasley beat Aaron Lamphere 7-1, and at 145, Nate Dornisch topped Kyle Leljedal, 8-2.
For Towanda, 112-pounder Cody Wheeler pinned Ricky Jay Javier in 3:17, Caleb Willey edged Kyle Caggiano, 7-6, at 125, Jevin Vanderpool beat Dakota Dahler, 11-6, at 130.
At 171 pounds, RJ Forbes decisioned Elker Seth Stahl, 13-6, and at 189, Travis Chesla beat Zack Zelcs, 4-0.
The Elkers are back in action Tuesday, hosting Keystone.
NOTES: In the Penn State match, with an announced attendance of 1,915, had little trouble with LHU and a Tri-County Area wrestler, former Clearfield Bisons star Brad Pataky, did well. Pataky, ranked 11th in the country 125 pounds, used a cement mixer to pin George Ester in just 50 seconds.
