DuBois wrestlers win Lewistown Duals

by Courier Express

Posted on January 25, 2010

LEWISTOWN - The DuBois wrestling team enjoyed a stellar day at the Lewistown Duals Saturday, going 5-0 to come away with the championship.
The Beavers beat Indian Valley (37-27), Wellsboro (55-18), Harrisburg (45-26) and Greensburg Salem (44-24) to set up a showdown with host Lewistown for the title. In the finals, DuBois upended the Panthers 40-22 to capture the crown.
DuBois' stiffest competition in pool action came from Indian Valley. The two schools each won seven bouts, but bonus points proved to be the difference as the Beavers collected them in six of their seven wins compared to two bonus-point wins for the Warriors.
DuBois got pins from Nick Bogacki, Matt Zimmerman, Landon Hanna and Jon Sunealitis, while T.J. Stanton received a forfeit. Joe Morrison recorded a major decision in the match, while Geno Morelli won by decision.
The Beavers won 11 of 14 bouts in their rout of Wellsboro and won nine bouts each in wins over Harrisburg and Greensburg Salem.
Those numbers proved to be a common theme as DuBois also took nine of the 14 bouts against Lewistown in the finals. DuBois got pins from Danny Robinson, Zimmerman and Hanna against the Panthers, while Anthony Vizza received a forfeit at 103. Bogacki recorded a major decision at 112, with Stanton, Garrett Brown and John Rivera all winning by decision.
Beaver Joe Morrison dropped a close 3-2 decision to Panther Colton Spade at 160. Spade was a state qualifier at 152 last year and went 1-2 in Hershey.
"Team-wise we wrestled extremely well," said DuBois head coach Luke Bundy. "Our goal was to go down there, go 5-0 and win it, and the kids accomplished that. I think a lot of the guys realized this weekend what it takes to become a good dual-meet team, and winning this was a total team effort.
"We were able to make some moves and different guys got wins in different matches. Greensburg Salem, Indian Valley and Lewistown were three pretty good teams and those were good wins for us. I know I've sounded like a broken record this year, but bonus points were the difference again for us.
"We had kids go out and get pins, kids not settle for a major decision and work for a tech fall or pin and get those extra points. Even when we lost, kids battled to not give up extra team points. That attitude has been a big difference this year."
Bogacki, Stanton and Zimmerman all went 5-0 on the day, while Vizza was 4-0. Brown and Sunealitis were 4-1 with Morrison, Hanna and Rivera enjoying 3-1 days. Zimmerman collected four pins on the day, while Bogacki had three falls.
DuBois (8-2) travels to Hollidaysburg Tuesday.
